Busy, busy, busy! What a very busy past month we had here at the Homestead. With Christmas came a busy, yet blessed time! We are ready to head into 2016 with a bunch of projects on our plate.

2015 was a mixed bag. A lot of good and some setbacks. But that is what comes with this life we live. We overdid it on a couple projects and really stretched our financial limits! We took a year debt free pledge (check out the form here). We are striving to be totally debt free within a couple of years. It will take some work, but we do not want to become slave to the lender, we want to totally honor the Lord with our finances.

Our chickens have really slowed down on their laying and we think we know why. They normally do this time of year due to the cold, but not to this extent. We think that ten or so have just reached the end of their egg laying ability. They are going on three years old and that can happen. We will be getting more chickens in March. One of our projects this year is to hatch our own chicks so we will never have to purchase them again.

We are also planning on raising meat chickens and hatching them as well. We are going to invest in a chicken plucker and set up a butchering station.  We want to eventually branch out into raising turkeys as well, but hatching egg laying and meat chickens will be our major project for 2016.

One thing we have learned is that we have to space out our projects and we realize that this is a never ending lifestyle! We will always be busy and have tons to do. We are so excited about the future and where the Lord is leading.

I hope the New Year finds you all well and may the Lord bless you !

trees, trees and more trees!

One of the first things you can do when you purchase your land is plant some trees. That is what we did and it is pretty inexpensive. We are big fruit eaters, so we knew that having trees that can produce fruit is very important. So we immediately planted some apple and plum trees our first year. This year we added some pear and cherry trees as well as some blueberry bushes.

You'll need to do some research on what fruit grows better in your area, and you will also need to do some research on pollination of your trees. For instance, we have pretty harsh winters, but our soil is great for planting all kinds of trees. Check out the fruit growing zone map in your area to see what will thrive.

Most of the trees we planted were very affordable. We purchased many of them for around ten dollars. The only other expense will be your fertilizer and peat moss.

Pests are another thing you will have to take into consideration. We live in an area where there are tons of deer. We have used an organic spray that has seemed to work well. Although last winter they did chew off some branches.

Overall, trees are a great investment. With minimal expense, you can plant a huge variety. If you are looking to start your homestead with something cost effective, consider planting some fruit trees!

Ephesians 3:20-21

20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
